May Fifth: A memoir

May Fifth is Russ Ackerman's memoir of a 30-year search for normalcy amid trauma and loss, shared with his late wife, Sue. The title is the day they were married. In a culture that prizes moving on, it is a story about keeping a promise, and about finding beauty in what is broken, with a parallel in kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold-dusted lacquer. Fall 2028 release.

“By embracing flaws and imperfections, you can create a more beautiful and valuable piece of art.”

— MAKOTO FUJIMURA ON KINTSUGI

“What did we have together? We loved to create beautiful things. We sought to understand the truth. In the midst of a lot of pain.”

— RUSS ACKERMAN
